Need For Speed – Film Review

need-for-speed-movie review

Aaron Paul drops the Heisenberg sidekick role to take the lead in the brand-new video game adaptation, Need For Speed. High octane thrill rides are what we can expect from this revenge story. Given by the trailers and TV spots, you already know that Aaron Paul plays a talented street car racer that seeks revenge on Dominic Cooper for an event that lands Paul in jail. He now must seek out a secret street race to take on his new arch nemesis, and leave him in his rear-view mirror.

Need For Speed is full of entertainment, even though it lacks in all other aspects. Yes, if you are a fan of fast cars, you will dig the car sequences that push the boundaries of speed and logic. But the real reason I really wanted to see this movie is the fact that I am an Aaron Paul fan due to Breaking Bad, like most of you are. I wanted to see him succeed as the leading man, because he really was just the stoner sidekick of Mr. Heisenberg through those 5 great seasons of the best show ever. And did he achieve lead man status? Absolutely…bitch. Paul takes charge in Need For Speed, and you really root for his character. The other characters, however, not so much.

His crew that consists of a very diverse set of humans, try their best to support Paul, with witty banter and camaraderie. It falls short most of the time, and then you have Imogen Poots that plays the sexy love interest that had absolutely no reason in being in the flick, but to only be the love interest who tries to act cute as well as tough.

Halfway through the movie, a certain event happens while Paul’s character tries to reach this secret race his enemy is racing in. I sat there thinking, “the whole movie should have just been this,” but sadly, it wasn’t. Now, I am not saying this movie was terrible, because the car sequences are shot very well, and Paul really keeps the movie together. Many will compare this to the Fast & Furious movies, simply because it has cars that drive fast…and furious. But these days, you can compare any movie to any other movie in its genre, so I say please don’t. Just remember this: the video game Need For Speed came out first.

Overall, I say if you are a fan of Aaron Paul, check it out. If you are a fan of fast cars, check it out. Throw out all logic, and just enjoy your experience. Let me know if you saw it, and what you thought about it. Check out my video review below to hear the words I typed with your own ears.
