Amazing Spider-Man 2 – Film Review

Spider-Man returns in the Amazing Spider-Man 2, and this time, facing Electro, The Rhino, and the Green Goblin. He is also faced with the task of dealing with his double-life, a relationship with Gwen Staci, and finding out what happened to his parents. Does that sound like a lot? Yes. It is a lot. But some out there tend to be fixated on the three villains aspect of the sequel. What three villains? Is what I say.

I enjoyed the Amazing Spider-Man 2, just a little bit more than the first one. The negative reviews I have been seeing out there always bash the fact that there are three villains, and are reminded of the abysmal Spider-Man 3. Why do we dwell on the past in the movie world? First off: The Rhino is barely in the movie. He actually didn’t need to be in the movie at all, but they want to set up the Sinister Six story, so I guess they felt the need to introduce him in this flick. The Goblin is also barely in it as well, because we get the whole Harry Osborn background, with the Goblin showing up at the end. So really, if you think about it, there is one main villain in the movie, and tht is Electro played by Jim Carrey…I mean Jamie Foxx. For a moment there, I turned to my friend and asked, “Are we watching Batman Forever?” Jamie Foxx’s betrayal of the nerdy, outcast, Max, very much emulated Jim Carrey as Edward Nigma in Batman Forever. I still dug the character though, but after he became Electro, and after the first fight scene between him and Spidey, I felt like they didn’t know what else to do with him. He just was there, and he and Harry team up (kind of) which led me to think, “Why didn’t they just use the Green Goblin instead?”

Another gripe with the movie is the jumbled plotline, and sappy love story. I gets old with the whole on and off relationship with Gwen and Peter, even though Garfield and Stone had perfect chemistry. They wanted too much from the plot, which caused the pacing of the movie to suffer at times, and I just wanted more Spidey action. You do get your fair amount of Spidey action, and it is oh so pleasing to the eyeballs.

If you liked the first one, you will most likely like this one. Andrew Garfield is a perfect Peter Parker/Spider-Man, and the actors perform well in their roles, even though the story is a bit excess. I say check it out in the theaters to watch the beautiful fight scenes. Also check out my video review below to hear me ramble on as usual. Let me know if you saw the Amazing Spider-Man 2, and what you thought about it.
