Godzilla – Film Review

godizlla-2014-movie-review

Godzilla is back! And we can hopefully forget about that abysmal first attempt back in 1998, where it seemed like it was more like Godzilla’s size changing, retarded cousin. Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, and Ken Watanabe, star in this latest reboot of the giant lizard…and that is pretty much all you need to know. We all know who Godzilla is and what he does, so no need for me to tell you the story.

I throughly enjoyed Godzilla, and for brief moments throughout the movie, I was worried that I wasn’t going to. If you have checked out other reviews for this flick, you no doubt know that Godzilla is not in the movie very much, and there is a lot of teasing that goes on throughout the movie. I’ve seen a lot of people actually bitch about that, but then I saw a lovely post that stated, “Godzilla has the same amount of screen time as the dinosaurs in Jurassic park, and Jaws in Jaws. Brilliant statement right there, and even though there was some frustration with all the teasing, it all pays off in the end battle sequence, and I commend the writer and director for that.

Gareth Edwards is brilliant for teasing us the giant lizard throughout the movie, because the build up is shot so well, that once you get some full on Godzilla destruction action, you feel like a kid again. Cheers and clapping throughout the theater ensued, and even the way they fully unveiled Godzilla in the middle of the movie was just fantastic. The performances were great, with each actor playing their part the way they should. The overall tone of the movie is beautiful, and the score compliments that tone perfectly in some parts of the movie, where it gave me goosebumps

Some might complain that the movie starts off a little slow, but this is an origin story mind you. The last 15-20 minutes is worth the crazy teasing in my opinion, so I highly suggest you guys seeing this, and suggest even paying the price for 3D IMAX. Check out my video review below to hear me yammer like always. Let me know if saw the movie and what you thought about it.

Saw the movie today. Absolutely spot on review. Can’t remember the last time a movie got me so anxious and jumpy. Maybe Jurassic Park when I was seven. Again, great Godzilla reboot, and great review.
