The numbers are in, and Guardians of the Galaxy blows away the box office into the cosmos. The newest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe scores big, by raking in $94 million breaking the current box office record for August. Marvel’s gamble on making a movie about characters not really known by the public has paid off, and it is always great to hear that. Get on Up, the James Brown biopic, didn’t really score too big, as it made only $14 million coming in third place. Here is the rest of the box office:

  5. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes                     $8.7 million/$189.3 million
  6. Planes Fire & Rescue                                    $6.4 million/$47.6 million
