Gravity has been on the minds of us FIlm Junkees ever since the first trailer was shown before watching Pacific Rim. Starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, and directed by Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity does not just show you a survival adventure in space. It surrounds you in it.
I saw Gravity in IMAX 3D, which I recommend everyone seeing it in. Although if you have a tough time with motion sickness, you might want to pass up on putting on those funky glasses. Some of the shots where the astronauts are spinning might be a bit much for the weary. Right from the beginning, Gravity hooks you with its beauty. The opening shot, which does not have an edit for about 13 minutes, is perfect. Alfonso Cuaron takes the Stanley Kubrick 2001: A Space Odyssey style, and pulls it into the current 3D world we have adopted with modern cinema. There are moments like in 2001, where it is just quiet. You cannot hear much of anything, which captures that essence of space. It is eerie.
With that lovely opening shot of the film, we get a brief introduction to the characters. With a film like this though, there really is not much time for character development, but they do as much development as possible. We find out that George Clooney’s character is a veteran astronaut on his last mission to space, and Sandra Bullocks character is new to the whole space walking life, but is there for much needed reasons. Everything then goes bad, when a Russian satellite gets hit by a missile, and the debris is sent in through Earth’s orbit to of course wreak havoc to our characters. Does not take long for this to happen, and the rest of the movie turns into a survival game for our stars.
Obviously the best part about the movie is the sheer beauty of visual effects. The detail they have accomplished is mind-blowing, and watching it in 3D makes you feel like you are right there trying to survive with them. Sometimes I wish I was there, because Sandra Bullock was looking pretty good out of that spacesuit and in a tank top and short shorts. Both actors do a pretty fantastic job with their roles. George Clooney definitely “George Clooneys” his veteran astronaut role, by keeping the humor alive as he tries to keep Sandra Bullock calm through their ordeal. Sandra Bullock does a great job as well, and really the movie is focused more on her than Clooney.
My only real gripe about the movie, is that they really were pushing to have that character development with Sandra Bullock’s character. I kind of wish she was just there to be there, and do the job she had to do, but there was this devastation she was holding on to which I will not spoil for you. Obviously with her character being in space for the first time, and the events that occur, she does get quite panicky, so you will her some orgasm noises coming out of her (not pun intended) which might get a little annoying for some, but I was not one of them.
I highly suggest checking out Gravity, because it is a beautiful piece film, that keeps you on the edge of your seat, and will not make you want to be an astronaut at all. 3D is the way to go on this one gang, and that is saying something because I am actually not a fan of 3D. You will not regret it if you do, Check out my video review as well, and let me know what you thought about the flick.
