As Above, So Below brings in the found footage genre, this time following a young girl on a quest to find a stone her dead father was trying to locate. After finding a major clue that almost gets her killed in the beginning of the story, she figures out that the stone has to located in a section of the Paris Catacombs that no one has really explored. She drags along a man who is filming her as part of a documentary, as well as an old flame who can translate for her into the Catacombs, only to find that this section they are in, could be the entrance into Hell.
As Above, So Below is…a shit sandwich. Not a full shit sandwich. More of like a half shit sandwich. The first half hour might have you bored out of your mind, because the filmmakers try to establish depth in the characters, but the script is poorly written, and the dialogue is horrendous. Why is it that with found footage, the people have the worst dialogue? Once they get themselves in the tunnels, some scare does ensue, but you realize that the main character is an unruly bitch who dragged two men into a nightmare they can’t get themselves out of.
What worked for the movie is the fact that the filmmakers had to get creative on how this group of people were going to get picked off. Some visuals and sounds were used pretty greatly, but I also felt like they should’ve used standard filming with the found footage, because sometimes it felt like they edited the flick that way. Probably just poor filmmaking and actors not being able to carry out scenes in one shot, so I don’t understand why they just didn’t combine standard with found footage.
Overall, As Above, So Below is one to pass up in the theaters. Save it for a Netflix or Red Box night with someone to snuggle up with. Check out my video review below to hear me bicker more about the movie. Let me know if you saw it and what you thought about it.
