Did You Know that The Avengers Got an R Rating Twice?

Well here’s something I didn’t know, and you probably didn’t either. Turns out the coming together of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes on the big-screen, The Avengers, got an R rating…twice. In an interview promoting Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Kevin Feige talked about how The Avengers was first branded with an R rating in its first couple cuts of the flick.

When we submitted The Avengers, the first couple cuts of it came back from the MPAA rated R. That happened twice, so we went back and had to make adjustments.

When asked why it was given an R rating, Feige stated it had to do with that scene no one saw coming, and no one wanted to see.

Well, whenever you impale somebody from their back and the blade comes out their chest, there are issues.

Yes, the infamous Agent Coulson scene where Loki stabs through the back with his trusty spear. It is funny how one scene can change the entire movie because of what the MPAA thinks. But hey, if Jaws got a PG rating, why should that even mattered?

Feige was also asked if if Agent Coulson will appear in Avengers 2 considering he was brought back to life in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D TV show. He wasn’t as vocal about that information as he was about the R rating.

That is a good question that I probably shouldn’t answer for any number of reasons.
