We knew Marvel had some other tricks up their sleeves for their universe of superheroes, but I do not think anyone thought this would happen. Marvel/Disney have teamed up with Netflix to create live action shows for Daredevil, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage for 2015. Many wondered if Marvel had plans to bring back Daredevil, after their first attempt was rather abysmal. Now it seems that we will see the blind superhero once again, but this time with hopes of something good.
If that was not enough comic book-gasms for you, check out what they plan to do:
the epic will unfold over multiple years of original programming, taking Netflix members deep into the gritty world of heroes and villains of Hell’s Kitchen, New York. Netflix has committed to a minimum of four, 13-episodes series and a culminating Marvel’s The Defenders miniseries event that reimagines a dream team of self-sacrificing, heroic characters.
So Marvel wants to do what they did with The Avengers to these characters, only they will have a ton of freedom having them be on Netflix. It is a bold strategy, and I actually like this idea very much, and feel more TV content will follow in their path. The beauty of having a show on Netflix, is it really does not have the pressure TV shows on network TV have, and it certainly has new restrictions when it comes to how gritty the content can get.
We will see how this plays out in 2015, and you got to wonder how this will effect ABC’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Maybe if ratings drop on that show, Marvel will decide to bring it over to Netflix. Let me know what you think about this.
