Huge earnings over this Thanksgiving weekend that set some pretty awesome box office records. It was a head-to-head battle of fire and ice, with Hunger Games: Catching Fire heading into its second weekend going up against the new Disney movie, Frozen. It was close, but fire won.
Catching fire took the top spot over the holiday weekend, by pulling in $78.3 million over the actual weekend, and $110 million from Wednesday. In just 10 days, Catching Fire has succeeded $300 million, and even adds another $275 million domestically. Disney’s new animated feature, Frozen, came in a close second, by pulling in $66.7 million from the actual weekend, and $93 million since Wednesday. Both of these movies beat out previous Thanksgiving weekend box office records previously held by Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Here is how the weekend panned out:
- Hunger Games: Catching Fire – $78.3 million
- Frozen – $66.7 million
- Thor: The Dark World – $11.1 million
- Best Man Holiday – $8.5 million
- Homefront – $6.9 million
- Delivery Man – $6.9 million
- The Book Thief – $4.8 million
- Black Nativity – $3.8 million
- Philomena – $3.7 million
- Last Vegas – $2.7 million
