George Miller Talks Mad Max Sequels and Warner Bros. Meetings

George Miller Talks Mad Max Sequels and Warner… by filmjunkee

Still think George Miller is going to direct Man of Steel 2? Well as much as I would love to give you that confirmed news, the quotes on this post take that idea even further away from being true. Miller discussed spoke with Top Gear about Mad Max Fury Road, and how difficult it was getting the sequel on the big screen.

This film [Fury Road] was green lit three times and fell over three times over a decade.

We went to shoot with Mel Gibson back in 2001, but then 9/11 happened, and the American dollar collapsed against the Australian dollar close to 30 per cent, so we lost that amount of budget overnight.

We were then rained out of Australia. The desert rained for the first time in 15 years, and we ended up in South West Africa, Namibia. But in this process, we had dug down deep into the backstory, not only of the characters, but of every vehicle. How the steering wheels became religious artifacts and things like that.

So we ended up with two scripts, without really trying. We’re talking to the studio [Warner Bros] about it as we speak, but which one of the two stories will happen next, I’m not so sure.

The speaking with Yahoo! i tells us that yes, he was meeting with Warner Bros. for a movie, but it wasn’t a DC superhero movie. He was discussing the film adaption for Akira.

There was talk of it, but I’ve got so many things on my dance card, I don’t have the time to do everything. I don’t know where that came from. I’m a huge fan of anime and the precision of that and to some degree Manga, even though I don’t read Japanese, but just the aesthetic of it. So Akira might have been one of the many movies but it certainly wasn’t one that directly influenced Mad Max.
