Dallas Buyers Club – Film Review

Dallas Buyers Club stars  and , and it is based on a true story about a raunchy electrician, who sometimes bull rides, man named Ron Woodroof. He then gets bad news that he is HIV positive for being so careless in his life, but instead of just withering away and dying, he decides to do something about his illness. And that “something” shakes up the FDA, and almost causes a revolution.

Dallas Buyers Club is an excellent film, full of fantastic performances, and a great story about a man who goes through a metamorphesis. Matthew McConaughey lost a ton of wait to play the HIV strickened Ron Woodroof, but that only transformed him into the character a little more. This is not the McConaughey that used to be in constant brain numbing movies where he constantly had his shirt off to show those abs. No, this is a whole new McConaughey that is showing people that the guy can act. Earlier this year, he starred in the movie Mudd, which he also got praise for, but I think in this movie he is a shoe in for an Oscar nom. Jared Leto also transforms himself into the cross dressing, Rayon, and it’s a Jared Leto like you have never seen him before. He should definitely get a support Oscar nom, and the chemistry they both have is truly magnificent.

Now that I have mentioned the Oscar caliber performance from the two leading men, the story of what Ron Woodroof tried to achieve, truly captured just how bad the FDA is when apporving the medicine that helps people. Doctors gave him 30 days to live, and decided to do some research and realized just how the FDA is more about money, then actually helping people out with their illnesses. So he starts the Dalls Buyer’s Club, but selling memberships to people with HIV or AIDS, so they can have an endless amount of medicine to help with them. The struggles ensue as he tries to keep the underground business going, but that is what I loved about this movie. The once raunchy, womanizers, drunken drug attic, transforms himself as a leader in a movement to better his fellow man.

I guess my only pripe about the movie is the director had this knack for ending scenes that didn’t seem ready to end. You get use to it, but sometimes I found myself questioning why it would cut to another scene. Other than that, this movie will be nominated for all kinds of awards come award’s season, and I actually hope McConaughey wins something for it, due to the extreme transformation he went through. If you have seen Dalls Buyer’s Club, let me know what you thought of it. You think McConaughey or Leto will win the gold for this one?
