Probably no shock that The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug took the box office gold this weekend, with a $73.6 million in earnings. This is a slight decrease from the orginal Hobbit movie that took in $85.6 million, but I don’t think anyone’s crying about it. Hobbit took in an estimated $31.1 million on Friday, after pulling in $8.8 million on Thursday night sales. The only new competetitor it had was The Madea Christmas movie and yes, it didn’t stand a chance.
The Madea Christmas movie pulled in $16.2 million, which is the least amount a Madea movie has brought in on its opening. I think people are finally getting sick and tired of Tyler Perry recycling the same jokes and storylines over and over again, so hopefully this will be the last in the series. Here is how the box office rounded out.
- The Hobbit – $73.6 million
- Frozen – $22.2 million
- A Madea Christmas $16.2 million
- Hunger Games; Catching Fire – $13.1 million
- Thor: The Dark World – $2.7 million
- Out of the Furnace – $2.3 million
- Delivery Man – $1.9 million
- Philomena – $1.8 million
- The Book Thief – $1.7 million
- Homefront – $1.6 million
So let me know what you saw this weekend. I didn’t see anything simply because I haven’t seen the first Hobbit movie, and have not and will not see a Madea movie ever.
I am so ticked off this wasn’t the last part of the hobbit movie already I was ready for complete closure when the screen went black and the credits began scrolling.
Arrrrrggg!
