Melissa McCarthy co-writes and stars in Tammy, a road trip movie that sees the character having pretty much the worst day anyone could have. From hitting a deer, to getting fired from her job, Tammy decides she has had it with her life in the town she is in, and will now hit the road with her grandma, play by Susan Sarandon. They meet some new people, and try to survive the road trip, and you would think with the additional cast that includes Kathy Bates, Allison Janney, Gary Cole, Toni Collette, and Dan Aykroyd, how can this movie be bad? Well…somehow that was achieved.
Tammy is an hour shorter than Transformers 4, yet I felt like I was sitting there longer. Most of the jokes miss pretty badly, and the only time I really laughed out loud was when Dan Akroyd spit out a pretty funny line. Sad thing is, it was towards the end of the movie, and he was in the movie for about five minutes.
Melissa McCarthy is now getting that stigma that she is being type-cast, and it is true, but I rather enjoyed the movies she was previously in. It seemed her comedy chops were just not used correctly, and that she didn’t know how to act at times. She is a great ad-libber, but in this movie I felt she didn’t have that great personality trait switched on. The rest of the cast was easily forgettable as well, and can’t seem to grasp why they chose to be in the movie. I did hear Kathy Bates say she did it because she loves McCarthy, which kind of breaks my heart, because McCarthy is a sweetheart when you see her being interviewed.
I don’t recommend rushing out to see Tammy at all, unless you want to sit for an hour and a half not laughing or lightly chuckling. Check out my video review down below to hear talk more about it. Let me know if you saw the flick, and what you thought about it.
